I think we’d put that bottle of champagne in the fridge four times already, but each time someone else bid more for the house we wanted to make our own. This time we hit the jackpot, with a house that needs far more work than anything we bid on before, but which seems to hit every single one of the countless want-to-haves we drew up when we started the year-long search.
We wanted close to downtown, yet accessible for freeways as well as transit, and we wanted something smaller rather than bigger. He needs a garage for the car, the kayak and the other toys and tools, while she dreamed about a south facing garden for the occasional tomato plant. We agreed that three bedrooms were plenty (yet we bid unsuccessfully on two houses with five) and we really didn’t want to pay the big bucks for a finished basement we would never use, or a reno that somebody else likes. We wanted something that was practical, efficient and energy-light, with both character yet convenience. And we were both fed up with looking, him more than her.
So we got this one, beating out a dozen other bidders in a still-silly Toronto housing market. It’s going to take a while to turn it into the house we want, and there are a million decisions we’re going to have to make, but we’re going to give it a go.
I already blog about jams and chutneys. Why not talk about the reno too?

I think there’s a sign-up link there now. This site is still very much a work in progress.
