The plan: Let’s take a small, but solidly built (we hope) home in a central part of Toronto and turn it into something that works for the two of us. We want something comfortable and functional rather than finished and fancy, and we’re neither of us keen for brand names or best in class. We’re not looking for major additions or structural change. But can we lower our carbon footprint? Try not to throw quite so much away?
The players: He’s the practical one, with experience in repairs, rebuilding and eco-energy, and the know-how to make this work. Her renovation skills stop at painting a room, changing a fuse and — in one particularly traumatic moment — dismantling a bathroom washbasin to find an errant contact lens. But she’ll write the blog, if he lets her.
It will take time. Please follow along.
